Here at Upland Dental Implant & Orthodontics we know that pain may be one of your deepest concerns, especially if it turns out you’ll need oral surgery. Fortunately, we can make your dental care pain-free enough that you can sail through it or sleep through it.
Even if you don't need dental surgery, fear of the dental office may stop you from getting the dental care you need. We can provide sedation to help “take the edge off” and make your appointment an easy and unmemorable one.
You can contact us to schedule an appointment at any of our 3 offices - Rancho Cucamonga, Chino, or Wildomar - or read on to find out more about pediatric dentistry.
Local Anesthesia
For most procedures, a local anesthetic is used to eliminate pain. This is the most conservative form of sedation dentistry, and is often the default for minor procedures.
We might use a topical anesthetic, or we might use an injectable (e.g. Novocain). Sometimes we use both, as many people cringe at the idea of taking a shot in the gums. In reality, the shot is not very painful at all and will soon provide plenty of relief, especially if you have a toothache.
Oral Sedation
With oral sedation, you'll typically be very relaxed and may not even remember much of the procedure. Most people will be drowsy but still awake, and may be "in and out." Some people even fall asleep.
If you take oral sedation we ask that you have someone drive you to our office, and that you arrange ahead-of-time for someone to take you home.
Laughing Gas
Contrary to popular belief, laughing gas doesn't make most people giggle uncontrollably. It mainly eases anxiety, and makes you feel relaxed and mildly euphoric. It can help you get through dental procedures with a minimum level of anxiety. You may even drive yourself home after using laughing gas.
IV Sedation, AKA General Anesthesia, for Dental Surgery
IV sedation can help you sleep through an entire surgery. We use it most often for wisdom tooth removal or for placing dental implants. In special cases and on request we may use it if you're just terrified for whatever reason. If we don't need you awake and able to respond to questions and instructions this form of sedation is an option.
Of course, for general anesthesia you'll need someone to drive you to the office and back home.
