When you need dental implants the hope is always that both your upper and lower jawbones will be good candidates for the procedure. Yet sometimes the deck is stacked against us. Sometimes the upper jaw bone is too short and too shallow to hold dental implants properly. That's where a sinus lift comes in. It allows us to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw and allows us to add enough space in your upper jaw to make room for the implants.
To do that, we must lift and move the sinus membrane and then graft additional bone to your existing jaw bone (in what’s called a bone graft). We then allow the surgery to heal. Once the surgery has healed completely, we'll be able to add your upper-jaw dental implants and you'll get to enjoy all the benefits that come from a fully functional set of prosthetic teeth.
Does a sinus lift make your face look different?
No. You'll be relieved to know that there is absolutely no change in facial appearance after a sinus lift. It’s not like facelift surgery in any way.
Once your dental implants are placed, you'll be even better able to preserve your facial features. That's because dental implants will help you maintain your jawbone by keeping it strong and preventing bone loss. Bone loss in the jaw bone can cause facial changes as we age, but you’ll sidestep that problem.
Does a sinus lift hurt?
You'll be under sedation during the sinus lift procedure, so you're not likely to feel anything while the work is underway.
Afterwards, you might feel some pain due to swelling and bleeding. We'll give you pain medication to reduce the pain and antibiotics to help ensure there are no complications from infection.
We suggest taking one to three days off to recover. You should feel fully back to normal within about a week.
Full healing will take place over the course of about six months. After that, we'll be able to place your dental implants.
What are the risks of a sinus lift?
There's a small risk that your surgeon may puncture or tear one of the sinus membranes.
Fortunately, there's an easy fix for that on the off-chance it happens: We simply place a patch over the tear, or stitch it.
Infection is, of course, a risk in any surgery, but that's why we prescribe antibiotics. Just take your full course of medication, apply common sense, ask us aftercare questions if in doubt, and you should be fine.
What's the average cost of a sinus lift?
The procedure can cost $1,600 to $2,400 per side. We will work with you and your insurance company to get as much of your surgery covered as possible.
